happy holidays

The holiday season is a time for family gatherings, festive meals, and cozy moments at home. However, with the increased number of guests and the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, your plumbing system can experience more stress than usual. To avoid any plumbing mishaps during this joyous season, here are some essential tips to keep your home’s plumbing in top shape.

1. Be Mindful of What You Put Down the Drain

The kitchen is often the heart of holiday celebrations, but it’s also where plumbing problems can easily arise. Avoid putting fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down the drain. These substances can solidify and clog your pipes. Instead, dispose of them in a separate container and throw them in the trash.

2. Use a Drain Strainer

Install drain strainers in your kitchen sink and bathroom drains to catch food particles, hair, and other debris. This simple device can prevent clogs and keep your drains flowing freely.

3. Don’t Overload the Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal is not a catch-all for food waste. Avoid putting fibrous foods like celery, potato peels, and onion skins down the disposal, as they can wrap around the blades and cause blockages. Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal to help flush the waste through the system.

4. Stagger Shower Times

With extra guests in the house, your water heater and plumbing system will be working overtime. To ensure everyone has enough hot water, stagger shower times and wait at least 15 minutes between showers. This will give your water heater time to recover and maintain a consistent hot water supply.

5. Be Prepared for Toilet Troubles

Toilets can easily become clogged with excessive use, especially if guests flush items that should not go down the toilet, such as wipes, feminine hygiene products, or excessive amounts of toilet paper. Keep a plunger handy and make sure there is a waste bin in each bathroom for these items.

6. Inspect and Insulate Pipes

Winter weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst, leading to significant water damage. Inspect your pipes for any signs of leaks or damage and insulate any exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and garages. You can use foam pipe insulation or even heat tape for extra protection.

7. Know Where Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve Is

In case of a plumbing emergency, it’s crucial to know where your main water shut-off valve is located. This valve can stop the flow of water to your entire home, preventing further damage until a professional can arrive to fix the problem.

8. Schedule a Pre-Holiday Plumbing Inspection

Consider scheduling a plumbing inspection with a professional before the holidays. A plumber can identify and fix any potential issues before they become major problems, ensuring your plumbing system is ready to handle the increased demand.

9. Clear Your Gutters

Though it might not seem directly related to plumbing, clogged gutters can cause water to pool around your home’s foundation, potentially leading to leaks or flooding. Make sure your gutters are clean and free of debris to direct water away from your home.

10. Educate Your Guests

Politely inform your guests about your home’s plumbing do’s and don’ts. This can include reminders about what not to flush down the toilet and tips on conserving water. Clear communication can go a long way in preventing plumbing issues.

By following these plumbing tips, you can ensure a stress-free holiday season with your loved ones. Proper maintenance and a little preparation can go a long way in keeping your home’s plumbing system running smoothly, allowing you to focus on making holiday memories.
